In any justice system, Corrections plays an integral role to ensure order in detainment facilities. There was a 3.4% increase every year between 1995 and 2005 according to the U.S Department of Justice. With such a steady increase in previous years of incarcerated individuals, employment in corrections will rise proportionately.

If you want to pursue a career in Corrections, you should identify certain traits or inclinations within yourself. Are you in shape? Physical fitness plays an important role in this often testing job situation. Being able to maintain discipline without loosing control at your own end is also another valuable quality. A Corrections career will be stressful and you should be prepared to manage your stress levels.

Correction officers and bailiffs are the two common corrections careers. With experience and an addition in education many supervisor jobs can open up for you.

Some prison or detention facilities do not require a corrections officer to have more than a high school diploma, though now that trend is changing. If a bachelor’s in Corrections isn’t the requirement, college credit in some of the courses is. Though degree programs are also available online at associate, bachelor’s and master’s levels.
